Caesarean Section
A Caesarean section or “C-Section” is an operation to deliver a baby through an incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. Dr Shammas is highly experienced in performing Caesarean deliveries for women who are unable to deliver their baby by a normal vaginal delivery. Caesareans are performed using regional anaesthesia such as epidural and spinal block or sometimes by general anaesthesia. There are three types of C section performed by Dr Shammas; low transverse, low vertical or high vertical. C sections are either planned (known as an elective procedure) or are performed as an emergency if you or your baby are in distress or if there is a difficulty during a normal vaginal delivery.
Reasons for Caesarean section
Dr Shammas will recommend an elective Caesarean section when a normal vaginal delivery would put your baby or yourself at risk. Common reasons for Caesarean sections include:
- if there is a twin or multiple pregnancy
- if there is high blood pressure in mother
- if the the baby is in breech presentation
- if you have an obstructed labour
- if there are problems with the placenta (placenta praevia) or umbilical cord
- if there has been a previous caesarean section and she doesn't consider it safe to have a normal vaginal delivery for subsequent births
